phantom tollbooth is fifty years old; the new yorker did an anniversary essay about its inception and MEANING and PLACE. totally re-reading it this weekend. two - a few weeks ago the NYTimes featured CHEWED, a book filled entirely with photos of old dog toys. our particular beast likes to make a tiiiiiiiny hole in her stuffed ducks/porcupines/bears and pull the stuffing out puff by puff. at the end she's left with a completely flat duck/porcupine/bear carcass and the living room floor looks like it's covered in little clouds. lovely to look at; borderline ridiculous to clean up.
